American Chemical Technologies, Inc. (ACT) supplies fire retardant and anhydrous polyalkylene glycol (PAG) hydraulic fluids, as well as specialty greases, to meet the unique performance and EH&S requirements of the tunnel boring industry. Hydraulic fluids for tunneling must provide essential load carrying, heat and wear performance characteristics. The thrust, torque and other forces generated during tunnel boring are enormous and are accompanied by high fluid flow rates, creating a significant potential for leaks and environmental impact. This has led to increasing adoption of anhydrous PAG-based fluid products, which have a favorable environmental profile and do not leave a sheen on the surface of water. Neptune® AW and UCON™ Trident™ AW fluids from ACT are “Readily Biodegradable” according to OECD 301F, classified as “Relatively Harmless” or “Practically Non-Toxic” to fish and other aquatic wildlife by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and pass the EPA 40 CFR 435 Static Sheen Test to comply with the U.S. EPA Clean Water Act. Because the fluids dissolve readily in water and do not produce a sheen, they can reduce the need for costly wastewater treatment operations in the event of a leak.
